Overview Nettle (Urtica dioica) has been used since the Bronze Age, initially the fibers from the stalks were used to make a cloth similar to linen. In fact, the name nettle comes from words meaning “textile plant”. It is called “stinging nettle” because it can cause an itchy painful irritation upon contact with the skin.
